Abstract
The remains of a Bronze age rampart found near Bernstorf, above the Amper valley some 30 km north of Munich in Upper Bavaria, were studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The properties of the finds confirm the assumption that the rampart was destroyed by a fire, which caused much of the material to reach temperatures well above 1000°C. The results demonstrate the usefulness of Mössbauer sepctroscopy and XRD in studies of materials heated in disastrous fires.
